The elastance index for intracranial pressure estimation: A cine phase-contrast MR study with a fluid dynamics model

' X Abstract We investigated an intracranial pressure (ICP) estimation method based on aqueductal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow rate measurements from cine phase-contrast MR images. A fluid dynamics model is provided that relates CSF flow rate change to the elastance index, which is a parameter proportional to the ICP. Experimental results from 8 patients with clinical diagnosis of increased ICP showed significantly larger elastance index than 9 healthy adults (867.38k492.25 vs. 397.67+160.35, P=0.016). MR-based noninvasive ICP estimation may be a potentially useful tool in the assessment of clinical idiopathic intracranial hypertension.
